Morning Edition
Morning Edition was a collaborative drawing and print project that happened within the timeframe of our exhibition Starting Lines at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead (April 14th – August 30th 2026).
Happening early each Wednesday (Baltic’s first open day of the week), the project proposed that a morning might be better if it began with creativity instead of admin, emails, meetings or other prosaic pursuits. The task enacted in each session was straightforward – fill a page with 10 small drawings, each in response to a simple written prompt, allowing 4 minutes per drawing. The sessions, in a loose way, owed a debt to Julia Cameron's Morning Pages writing tool from her book The Artist's Way (1992).
Over 22 workshops hundreds of people participated in the project. At the end of each Morning Edition workshop, the group created one final drawing to contribute to a collective print – building an archive of variations of the same thing, reminding us that drawing is a way of celebrating different views of the same world. These collective drawings were pasted onto a billboard for everyone to see.
