Alexandra Hughes’ practice operates at the borders of photographic processes, materials and technologies and examines thresholds of time and place. In her recent position as Artist in Residence at the University of Sunderland (2013), Hughes furthered the photographic series Collage on Film, which is created through handmade masks placed inside the camera between the lens and film enabling an assemblage of exposures to be captured on a single frame of film. In this new work Hughes has extracted details from a range of architectures to form the framework to new masks and photographs. This work also extends through the addition of a new artist book Apertures /, developed and riso printed with Foundation Press.
The book displays a set of shapes and forms captured from disparate locations. The book reflects Hughes’ methods, drawing a correlation between architectural frames and the interior of the camera body. In Apertures/ the publication was presented at the Baltic Book Fair.
